SOB Results 2010-2023ish

SOB Volleyball Vacation tournaments are designed to be inclusive of all player types. Tourneys use an extensive seeded blind draw format. Players participate with multiple partners daily resulting in 30+ different partners (including AVP Pros) throughout the trip. Doubles Teams are created via round robin King/Queen of the Beach formats. MVP's are players recognized by their peers for positive attitude on the court, every day and every round.

Cabo: March 7th-14th, 2020

2020's Cabo San Lucas vacation (#55) saw SOB change hotel/beach to the Sheraton Grand Haceinda del Mar in Cabo San Lucas, and we have found our new PERMANENT HOME going forward! We couldn’t have been happier with the new beach that had no dust with really soft sand and an ocean filled with daily whales saying hi throughout the day. The new hotel had great food and rooms that were amazing. The proximity to downtown Cabo (12 minutes) allowed for easy adventures on the town for dinner, dancing and exploring. Lastly the small group of 64 players and 6 pros made the overall experience a 10 out of 10. We started off the week with getting 8 nets plus a bonus 9^th on the best beach in Cabo that saw remarkable volleyball all week long. As always with Cabo the guests started the week off with ladder coed 4's & for the 1^st night we “brightened” it up with ORANGE, at the Taco Bar, too bad the “Hooter’s” staff was off duty. Sunday more 4’s and the ladder for men’s/women’s 2's that evening & just like Saturday evening guests were greeted by a cooler full of beer for happy hour on the beach. Sunday was another night to explore the expansive grounds and restaurants at the hotel and for the adventurous crowd another night in downtown Cabo. We transitioned to the official King and Queen of the Beach tournament Monday and for the 1^st time we doubled up on clinics so guests can apply what they learn to tournament play earlier in the week. We also changed up our Pro Games (PG’s) to something special for the Cabo trip, now 45 minutes long! Who doesn’t want more time learning and playing with the best! Since the hotel is all-inclusive only until 11:30am (load up on food and drinks early) we like to venture off property a little more, Monday evening SOB pays for shuttles into Cabo for happy drinks (on us) then everyone heads off for dinner and reconvenes at El Squid Roe for dancing! By now guests have had a chance to go to the store on property to stock up on cheap beer & tequila putting those SOB coolers to good use. Tuesday was a double up for the KOB/QOB to start eliminating guests from the now 3 divisions of play. To close out the day we watched the Pro Demo games, man did we have some "showmen" and "showwomen," talk about exciting, thanks Troy, Eric, Ty, Travis, Emily & Geena! Midweek the 3-day KOB/QOB tourney came to an end, as players battled for first in all 3 divisions for each gender. As the finals winded down we conducted the coed 2x2 partner draw to setup Thursday’s tournament, but before the tourney let’s hit Cabo again! We bought cabs into town, had SOB happy hour, dinner (most of us enjoying the best tacos ever) then off to Cabo Wabo for dancing! Coed 2x2 was a busy day of volleyball, into clinics, PG’s, finals & another Pro Demo with the 4 men, into a SOB private dinner on the plaza. As we come to the end of the week, exclusive to Cabo, we finish with 3x3 tourney, this time men’s 3’s and women’s 3’s in 2 divisions. As we enjoyed our last sunset we headed into Cabo via SOB cabs for the awards dinner and drinks dressed in our classy whites! Great food, drinks, balloons & people, what a way to end the week before heading back to the “Real World.” Thanks to the 75 guests who trusted us at our new location, we hope you enjoyed it and 2021 can’t get here soon enough! Puerto Vallarta: November 30th-December 7th, 2019 (Up to 96 players & 6 AVP Pros)

This vacation (#53) is our 11^th year to the Rivieria Nayart/Jalisco region and 53^rd trip overall, where we set up 13 nets in front of the awesome #HardRock for week #2 2019!! Every year this trip starts out as one big FAMILY reunion on the beach, which rolls into the hot tub after some volleyball, which leads to dinner at the Brazilian restaurant for Green night!!! On Sunday we continued our tradition of “the speech” right into coed 4s and the doubles ladder followed by 100 people on a Sunset cruise!!. Monday morning was the 1^st round of the King and Queen of the Beach, which was followed by some pick up. That night we hung out in the Rock Star Suite playing pool and watching the Seahawks beat the Vikings. Tuesday was the 2^nd round of the tournament followed by some King of the court with the Pros, a very fun Q&A with the Pros, ending with some New Zealand/German drinking games and dancing in downtown PV. Wednesday was a full day of volleyball for those who made the elite 8 in the afternoon. The Coed blind draw that night was crazy on the front steps of the hotel!!! Toby ended up drawing 1 male partner and 6+ lady partners, so of course he was the big winner = pays to be a proxy!! Thursday was full of clinic, play with the pro, and FINALS all day!! The day finished with some sunset Hook! Friday was packed full of Coed doubles!! Pool play in the morning and bracket in the afternoon with the finals finishing just before dark. Friday night is always reserved for White clothes and Tans! And what a night it was, lots of memories shared of the week and more memories made!! Cabo San Lucas: March 9th-16th, 2019 (Up to 144 players & 8 AVP Pros)

2019's Cabo San Lucas/San Jose del Cabo vacation (#51) saw SOB return to the Holiday Inn Resort in sunny San Jose del Cabo for the fourth year running. 15 nets went up on one of the widest and most volleyball friendly beaches in Mexico and the guests were kind enough to grace them with terrific volleyball all week long. Ladder 4's and 2's lead into a King and Queen of the Beach tournament that was broken up only by two exciting side trips. Monday saw the whole crew head a few miles North-East, up the coast to a sleepy little gem of a bar called Buzzard's, where guests sipped on cold beer between games of Hook on 3 nets set up on a secluded fishing beach. Some unexpected company distracted us from the game and sent SOBer's scrambling for their cameras as a school of humpback whales breached and splashed around just a hundred yards off the coast! Tuesday evening brought the crew to Cabo San Lucas for dinner on the town followed by drinks and dancing at world-famous Cabo Wabo. Spring break was in full swing in Cabo San Lucas and our group was more than happy to show those college kids the proper way to cut a rug! The King and Queen tournament lead into Coed and Men's doubles tournaments later in the week before we finished with a Coed 3's tournament (unique to the Cabo trip) at the end of the week. Every Thursday night in San Jose there's an Art-Walk and the town really comes to life, especially when the SOB sponsored cabs dropped off our active group. We enjoyed a night on the town checking out local art, street performers, amazing food and the party atmosphere unique to San Jose's town square. The end of week awards were held in an intimate white room (to match our traditional week ending white outfits) at the Holiday Inn where we laughed, clapped and reflected on another great week south of the border.

Ixtapa: January 19th-26th, 2019 (192 players, 250 total guests, 12 AVP Pros)

This vacation (#50) was our 25th year to the Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo region and our 50th trip overall, where we fit 32 nets on the beautiful beach starting at our Park Royal hotel and stretching as far as the eye could see. Every year is special in Ixtapa, but this year was a little extra special marking SOB’s 50th trip to Mexico and 25th year making memories in paradise!! Opening night was BLACK attire this year and capped off by some awesome Thumper games at Alex’s. After the first round of play on Monday everyone that wasn’t on the boat trip headed to La Perla for some lunch, Hook on Playa La Ropa, and some beers. The boat trip was a huge success as always and featured guest bartender April Ross. The boat trip customer’s stormed the beach and everyone watched another EPIC sunset between the cliffs. Tuesday brought us the 2nd round of the King/Queen along with some private pro games, with our biggest crew of pros ever…..12! Tuesday night was theme night and it did not disappoint with everyone dressed in their best “Naughty or Nice” attire at the Sexy Bar. Wednesday the King/Queen was now in 3 divisions and working its way to the Sweet 16 Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon there was a large gathering in the lobby so those eliminated from the King/Queen could be matched up for the Coed tournament. Friday was filled with FINALS!! And the final game of the day did not disappoint with a Troy Field and Ian Hansing comeback win in extra points 22-20 against the Steve’s. Friday night’s award dinner was filled with White clothes and much love! Thanks to everyone who has been a part of 50 SOB trips over the last 25 years and cheers to another 50 trips!! Puerto Vallarta: November 24th-December 1st, 2018 (115 total guests, 92 players & 7 AVP Pros)

This vacation (#49) is our 10th year to the Rivieria Nayart/Jalisco region and 49th trip overall, where we set up 13 nets all in front of the beautiful Hard Rock Vallarta Hotel. We love this trip for being so intimate and we don't mind staying at the 5-star Hard Rock Hotel. Our pros for this trip are some of the top in the USA, and this year was no exception with the 7 that made it down. We also made some new tweaks for 2018 PV's (both weeks), we added the Men's and Women's 2's ladder on Sunday evening (pioneered in Cabo). We also changed up the format for Coed and did pool play which made things a little smoother. Besides the new additions we did our usual opening night theme color with RED, did we paint the hotel? Maybe. As always we burned off that jet lag with coed 4's, pro games a clinic & the 2's ladder. Monday was a perfect start to KOB and QOB with more pro games and clinics or just a drink by the beach & we capped it off watching the pros strut their "Volleyball muscles." Tuesday we played more and did our side trip out to Yelapa and hiked the waterfall. Upon our return was dinner at the hotel (around a few games of 21, shirts off). Wednesday we had our 2nd "rainout" delay out of 389 possible days. Guests didn't mind they still played in the rain, played cards, napped, pool volleyball, etc. However it did clear up and we did get one of our best sunsets of the trip! Thursday we made up for lost time and had a triple header, guests that moved on were warriors! Congrats to our 24 KOB/QOB finalists that day. We had our auction and coed draw before bed so Friday we were ready to go for Coed 2x2 play. Throughout Friday people played tourney play into pickup and more pro games and clinics. We finished a long coed day with 3 more champions! To end our amazing week we closed with the award ceremonies in our classy WHITE clothes to show off that TAN and recognize our winners and our 9 MVP's! We want to thank everyone for an amazing week that was flawless because of great customers (all 115) like yourself. See you on the beach!!!

Puerto Vallarta: November 10th-17th, 2018 (Up to 96 players & 6 AVP Pros)

This vacation (#48) is our 10^th year to the Rivieria Nayart/Jalisco region and 48^th trip overall, where we set up 13 nets in front of the awesome #HardRock and 2 nets in front of the Occidental right next door for a total of 15 nets in week #1. Every year this trip starts out as one big FAMILY (drink) reunion on the beach, which rolls into the hot tube after some volleyball, which leads to dinner at the Brazilian restaurant for Red night!! Sunday brought some new programming with the doubles ladder play, SO good to play a round of doubles before the King and Queen start. Monday morning the 1^st round of King and Queen was played followed by lots of pick up and the pro demo. Monday night we saw how Rock Stars live with a great happy hour in the Rock Star suite. Tuesday was the 2^nd round of tournament followed by a VERY “smooth” boat ride, which included a Q&A from the pros. Wednesday was packed full of volleyball and NO rain (read vacation #49 week 2 for more info on rain). Thursday morning was a sleep in day for some, others played pick up and pro games until the afternoon finals started. This day finished with some hook after the finals and dinner in beautiful Bucerias! Friday was programmed full of the Coed tournament which featured a tweaked format, pool play into bracket. And finally Friday night, everyone is looking awesome decked out in white ready to be photographed by the amazing Russ. There was food, drinks, speeches, even some tears (good tears of course), and then the night was capped by 1 big SOCCCCCCCCCCCCCCIAL!!! Until next time PV……..

Ixtapa: January 13th-20th, 2018 (192 players, 250 total guests, 10 AVP Pros)

This vacation (#46) was our 24th year to the Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo region and 46th trip overall, where we fit 30 nets on the beautiful/wide beach in front of our Park Royal hotel. The trip sold out in record pace as this has become a must do for any volleyball junkie. As usual the volleyball competition was top notch, the local authentic food cheap, the party atmosphere the best, & the professionals knowledge top notch. We kicked off the week with our opening night theme color of PURPLE! As always the snorkel trip sold-out and didn't disappoint (the other half of the group enjoyed extra pickup play and clinics. Then everyone met up in Zihaut for 3 nets of hook and as always it was a blast, the 300 cold beers kind of help, especially New costume/theme night was "Saturday Night Live Characters" and everyone did an amazing job getting into their favorite character at The Sexy Bar. At the end we finished with record high auction numbers (over $7k for local Zihaut schools) at the award ceremony and dressed in WHITE to show off that TAN!!! Then the group rallied and we took over Mangoz across the street with everyone still in their whites. The table dancing & balloons were a perfect way to end the week.

Puerto Vallarta: November 26th-December 3rd, 2017 (96 players, 130 total guests, 6 AVP Pros)

This vacation was our 9^th year to the Puerto Vallarta/Nuevo Vallarta region and 45^th trip overall! Affectionately referred to as “Week #2 PV” this was the first of many years to come with 2 weeks in Puerto Vallarta!! The Hard Rock rocked as usual with Luis serving up tasty dishes at the Sushi bar all week. The trip started on a Sunday with some SOCIALLLLLLLLLLLL 4s play and dress in “Black” night at the Brazilian restaurant. Monday everybody doubled up with 4s in the morning followed by the first round of doubles play, the doubles round was kicked off with a Zen stretching session led by the one and only Ty Loomis “Zen Master.” That night there was a dance party on the sunset cruise started by our youngest passengers, followed by all ages. Tuesday started with round 2 of doubles play followed by a clinic and some private pro games. The day ended with an epic 3s Pro Demo and then some stellar hook games. The Rock Star suite was rocking with a record 41 people in ONE shower and a Doble tequila tasting going on. Wednesday we wrapped up the 3^rd round of doubles and then headed to Punta Mita for some snorkeling and surfing. The day ended with a Pro Demo of no jump hook followed by an amazing sunset on our own private beach. Thursday was full of 2s finals and a Ty & Ty “Nacho Libre” inspired playing style We also saw the battle of “USA vs Germany” where the good guys won in an epic battle of Ty/Ty vs Simon/Felix. Friday = Coed/Coed/Pro Games/Coed/Pro Games and some more Coed. Friday night some groups went out for dinner in Bucerias to “get off campus.” Unfortunately Saturday came way too early (always does right?) as we watched the Coed finals. Some fun tidbits : The D1 Coed finalist had women that were in the D2 women’s final, Steve Devlin made all 4 finals over the 2 weeks in PV, the team of Mark Fries/Renata Baker beat the 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 seeded men on their way to 1^st place in Coed D1, and the ENERGY of this week was off the HOOK. Saturday night awards and white night where winners, staff, pros, and MVPs got some love! Lastly who can forget the awesome ball that Candelario Quiroz donated to raise a “little” more money for charity in Mexico, what a week! Or should we say what a “Week #2 PV”!!!!

Puerto Vallarta: November 12th-19th, 2017 (96 players, 120 total guests, 7 AVP Pros)

This vacation (#44) is our 9th year to the Puerto Vallarta/Nuevo Vallarta region and 44th trip overall, where we fit 14 nets all in front of our amazing 5 star hotel The Hard Rock Vallarta. This year was our widest and most level we have scene it. The volleyball competition is always great, the food at the hotel and in Bucerias amazing & the professionals knowledge top notch all 7 of them, wow what a ratio. The original PV soldout quickly with a big returning group of veterans along with a group of newbies to create some new energy. Our opening night theme color was BLACK! We like to kickoff the week and get everyone together with our sunset cruise where we check out the downtown lights and wait for the dance party to break out. Around the volleyball schedule throughout the week was a penthouse happy hour, and Tori & Jake were introduced to the ultra competitive "cracker race" game. Who is ready to challenge one of them in 2018? Our side trip was another new adventure (all included) out to Punta Mita and take multiple little nimble boats out to the Marieta Islands. The snorkeling was great into our own private beach, we had some beers and watched the pros get after it between the ocean and a lagoon. Finals were great in both the KOB/QOB to the Coed 2's. Our auction raised the most to date for a PV trip, thanks in part to a 3 time Olympian jersey. We had another night for great local food in Bucerias which can't be topped. For all our trips we close with the award ceremonies in WHITE to show off that TAN!!! We hoped everyone learned from the 7 amazing professionals and also enjoyed their 30 minute private games with as well. The tourney play fun, fair and competitive. The food to die for & the drinks cold and refreshing. The sand soft & the sunsets perfecto! Until next year, SOOOOOCCCCCCIIIIIIAAAAAALLLLLL!

Ixtapa: January 14-21, 2017 (192 players, 250 total guests, 10 AVP Pros)

This vacation (#42) was our 23rd year to the Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa region and 42nd trip overall, where we fit 28 nets on the beautiful Guerrero beaches. The volleyball competition was again at its best with some great players making the KOB/QOB finals in all 6 divisions. The local food in town was cheap & amazing at our favorite places like Deborah's, Frank's & Calabozo’s, to name just a few. The beer and TEQUILA SHOTS were, as always, a screamin’ deal at Alex’s! The AVP professionals’ knowledge (they)omit passed along was top notch with the 6 clinics and hundreds of private pro games, aka PPG’s. To top it all off, the party atmosphere this year was one of the best - whether it was early on playing pool games, lobby card games, to “pick your pony” on the court, to dancing, to late night bologna bar. Thanks for the positive energy all week long!

The trip kicked off early for some as the early birds were strong this year with almost 50 people getting in one, two, or even seven days early and staying in various places in Zihuat or Ixtapa to relax before EVERYONE arrives. This year’s opening night color was GREEN! Saturday during and after dinner the hotel looked like a St. Patrick Day’s parade. Great way to figure out who the 250 volleyball players are as well as our “hola me llamo” name tags to help get down names for the week!

Sunday after opening ceremonies we had some afternoon football watching (some guests happier than others with the results) but most of the guests were happy to be away from winter and get their feet in the warm sand. That night, as we like to say, “we got off campus” for cheap $1 beers with an old friend, ALEX.

Monday continued with the king/queen doubles as well as 80+ on the boat for snorkeling, food, twerking, drinks, backflip competition, napping & of course “diaper bobbing.” We spent the rest of the day with 200 of our new closest friends on one of the best beaches in the world playing our favorite noncompetitive game “HOOK!!!”. The pro’s again took the opportunity to get creative with their “props” using coconut drinks to set with or cocktail tables to pass with then jump off of for a little extra flair. As the day came to an end, we watched one of the best sunsets your eyes have scene; first row tickets were free!

The week continued with yet another round of volleyball, PPG’s, clinic #3 of #6, pickup play, pool volleyball, the women’s 2x2 pro demo match & of course our major theme night on Tuesday…. PAJAMAS!!! Full on “warm” onesies, robes & sweatpants, to “cooler” scantily clad outfits, just underwear & well… you get the idea. With the theme night as the instigator, Tuesday’s late night may have been the busiest “bologna bar” to date; well done everyone.

Wednesday kicked off with the first wave of elimination KOB/QOB rounds, which meant more pickup play, more participation in the clinics, more PPG’s scheduled and of course the men’s 2x2 & 3x3 pro demo matches where the “Loomis Wigs” were hilarious and Kolinske’s stunt double was looking pretty good. The night life was great with “happy hour” at Alex’s which led into Frank’s who had a live band to get down to.

Thursday the battles in each division were getting intense as each division was down to the sweet 16 then elite 8 players. The good news for eliminated players was the Coed option, fun times in the draw as we pair you up to form new “lifelong partnerships” and start the afternoon bracket to crown 6 more divisional winners by Friday morning. Thursday night was another “Sexy Bar” night where we got …. well SEXY as always.

The end of the week was here (insert emoji sad face) but Friday was one of the best days of the trip (insert emoji happy face). With most players eliminated the few that remained got to play their finals in front of all their old and new friends. Clinic #6 was everyone’s favorite topic of HITTING, by the end the Molten balls were getting smashed. For the 2^nd year in a row the hotel set up 20+ tables, an amazing dinner, and served drinks at the awards ceremony as we all dressed in our finest WHITES to show off those week-long Mexico TANS. We recognized each of the 12 divisional winners, as well as our favorite part, the MVP’s! This year our annual auction raised a record amount, $6,500 to go towards local Zihuatanejo schools. Thanks to all those who bid and to the pros for donating great items.

As always, we end the recap with “what a week of sun, volleyball, food, sunsets, friends, ocean/pool time, drinks and dancing!”. This week was top notch in all aspects, all was because of you! We look forward to all hanging out again on a beach, on your hometown courts, a reunion stop or a professional AVP tournament cheering on our favorite professionals!

Puerto Vallarta: November 12-19, 2016 (96 players, 125 total guests, 6 AVP Pros)

This vacation (#41) was our 8th year to the Puerto Vallarta/Nuevo Vallarta region and 41st trip overall. The hotel was amazing as always especially Manuel! The beach was as flat and wide as it has ever been which lead to the great volleyball competition. The 6 pros taught and played so many games that by the end of the week they were impressed with how improved everyone was, guess thats what happens when you play that many games, i.e. 131 for Mr Seeland. The early arrivals got a little volleyball in on the newly donated SOB Volleyball Vacations Net at the Buenaventura & then were taken to a nice downtown PV dinner and a fun walk down the Malecon for dessert. We kicked off the trip in color style with BLUE!!! Every looked great!!! Sunday was a bunch of volleyball (if you were NOT on Bucerias time Kris and Mike) with 4's, clinics and 2's which lead us into a boat cruise with an amazing sunset that may have sparked a dance party. Monday continued the King/Queen tournament, the 1st of the Private Pro Games which lead into the epic Pro Demo Match which was fun to be 1st row watching some killer 3x3! That wasn't enough for us so the pros continued and did coed 2x2, man those athletes are GOOD!!! Tuesday the overcast broke and we had "sunshiney" days the rest of the week. We were down to 3 divisions of King/Queen then we went on our side trip excursion. This years adventure the group went into downtown PV for ziplining and also a chance to explore downtown PV during the daytime. Wednesday the King/Queen tournaments were winding down and we crowned 6 winners, but before that happened we had a surprise arrival by the one and only Jeremy Akers, not sure who was happier the guests or Angie. Thursday started off with a morning clinic then we kicked off the coed bracket (after getting paired together the previous night) followed by more Private Pro Games, pick up and hook. As a group we headed out to Bucerias (1st visit there) and went dancing at The Drunken Duck with some silly wigs, great job by the live band. The week flew by as always and it was Friday already, we crowned 6 coed champs who battled through the heat and a tough double elimination bracket. After our final sunset we end the week as usual with everyone dressed in WHITE since we are all nice and TAN for the closing ceremonies. As we munched, had a beverage, recapped the week, recognized our winners, played a drinking game we ended with the MVP's our favorite part.

What else can we say but THANKS to everyone for making our 41st trip South of the Border a great one! How can it not be with great people, food, drink, beach, hotel, dancing, sun, adventures, pros, Manuel & of course the sport we love VOLLEYBALL! We look forward to 2017 and doing 2 weeks at this amazing location!

Cabo San Lucas: March 12-19, 2016 (144 guests, 6-8 AVP Pros)

This vacation (#40) was our 3rd year to Cabo San Lucas and 40th trip overall. The 2016 Los Cabos vacation marked our return to the California Baja Peninsula, for our annual South of the Border Spring Trip, this year included a new hotel and new BEACH! Over 125 guests joined us from 22 States, including the great white north, learning from the 6 pros on the beach. The week started off with big news, the beach was awesome and we were able to set up 26 NETS!!! We had 8 days of great weather to play as much volleyball as you wanted. The 5 professionals taught 5 group clinics and with special guest arrival on Wednesday of Mr Brent Doble to make it 6, most guests were able to get a Play with a Pro Session in before departure on Saturday morning. Highlights of the week included our usual opening color theme night, this year Black is Back, where we took over the outdoor buffet – followed by the beach bar – then closed down the Cantina. Tuesday was a great day of ball followed by the side trip, buses down to Cabo San Lucas for a walk around town followed by a dinner cruiser which turned into a dance off. After the cruise we piled into Cabo Wabo where special guest Toby Keith hit the stage with the house band! SOB organizers would like to take credit for this, but it was just good timing. On a side note, the second bus back to the hotel that night detoured back to Cabo Wabo to catch the show. All the SOBers got off the bus to go inside except 1 would “fell asleep” only to wake up parked in a dirt parking lot thinking he missed the hotel stop! Good thing the SOB buses were there to get everyone home! "Hooook" was in full force as always, games going until you couldn't see the ball anymore. In the style that only he can provide, Billy Schuster was noticed taking a shot of Tequila during a water break in the Elite 8 while everyone else on his net actually drank water. By Wednesday our Men/Women finalists battled it out after 5-6 rounds of tournament play and we crowned the Anejo/Reposado/Blanco CHAMPIONS! Continuing tradition for Thursday night we went to the "other Downtown," San Jose del Cabo for the Art Walk, dinner, cheap drinks and more dancing at El Companaire (The Barn) on the dance floor in our "stylin" wigs and St. Patricks Day best. Like last year the pros were in full "Spring Training" mode and would do as many drills as they could to entertain you with their skill along with the pro demo and King of the Court. New to Cabo this year was Play with the Pro games. Our photographer Russ working hard as always including the ever so popular PRIVATE photo shoots, thanks Russ! After a wind delay on Thursday afternoon, the week ended with a ton of volleyball and coed champions being crowned on Friday. One of the highlights and for the 2^nd year in a row, our professionals took on the local Mexican team in a battle royal winning the 1^st 2 games before mixing teams up for a FUN 3^rd game! The trip was capped off by the awards dinner Friday night. Another top notch award ceremony with the catered private dinner/drinks during the ceremony as we recognized the week's winners, the trips MVP's & the fifteen 2015/16 trip trifectas. The live and silent auctions raised over ??? for a local charities, a fantastic feat from an amazing group of people, that included a custom ball with photo for $1,000. Cabo San Lucas was another successful SOB Vacation, our guests got a chance to play the game they love on a beach for 8 straight days, have 1, 2, 20 or more cold drinks; dance a couple nights away, and meet like minded players from all over! Ixtapa: January 16-23, 2016 (230+ guests, 9 AVP Pros)

SOB #39 was our 22nd year to the Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo and sold out earlier than ever. It has become the can't-miss event for many players all over North America. Each year this trip sees 240+ players and friends, new and old quickly became one big family by week’s end. 2016 started off with our staff setting up 30 nets on a nice wide flat beach and Friday afternoon 50 early arrivals were on the beach shaking off jet lag and dialing in sand legs. Coed 4's started Saturday, however the highlight of the day was perhaps the best sunset we have ever had, simply amazing. Opening Night Color Theme was ORANGEand Saturday night in the lobby bar looked like a Bronco game!!! During the day on Sunday our volleyball transitioned from 4x4 into the first round of doubles, with scheduling adjustments made for players from NFL Playoff cities. Sunday also started the week’s daily clinics with the 9 pros offering great instruction. Sunday evening was our first night off property and newbie’s were introduced to the downtown area of Ixtapa, Deborah’s Restaurant, and their first night of "trouble" with Alex and "Teeeequuiilllla Shoooooottttssss!!!!" Monday was snorkel cruise day and half the group enjoyed the Picante while others played pick up at the hotel or explored Old Town Zihuatanejo. By Mid-Afternoon, 200 players had made it to Playa La Ropa for an epic afternoon of Hook at La Perla. We added a King of the Court Net this year which was well received and the main 4's court had a line wrapping around most of the perimeter. Following another La Ropa Sunset, everyone scattered to restaurants down the beach or in "Zihuat" for dinner.

Tuesday morning everything changed....the ocean got mad and said "no volleyball for you this morning!" All 30 courts washed out because of an epic 11 foot swell that threw amazing 20+ foot waves at the beach all day. On the bright side we had 1 dry court and as the tide receded, the staff was able to reschedule games on 12 wet but playable courts. The swell eventually backed down to its' usual 3-4', the courts dried out, and we had 30 courts back up and playable by Wednesday evening. In a way, it was a nice blessing as the damp sand stayed much cooler than years past which allowed for more pick up play during the day. Thanks to all of you for your patience!

We continued the fun Tuesday night at the Sexy Bar and Wednesday we went to the Tree House aka Kopados for a killer night of dancing. We had two pro demos again this year so we finished the day Tuesday and Wednesday watching some of the best athletes on the planet strut their stuff on center court, with epic waves crashing in the background.

Tournament elimination started mid-week and the "lucky losers" got to enter into the coed draw starting with some fun match making and "Oh that's a good match." Thursday saw more eliminations from sweet 16, to elite 8 and finally just our Friday finalists remained. With a majority of the players eliminated it was time to get crazy for THEME NIGHT: "Viva Las Vegas!" As always this group didn’t disappoint with their creativity. We saw multiple Siegfried and Roy's and their pet tigers, slot jockey's, slot machines, Blue Man group, Fear & Loathing, Vegas dancers, dealers, Hangover & of course the Bellagio Fountains! Friday saw all 6 divisions of KOB/QOB get crowned along with the 3 divisions of Coed 2's. Congrats to all the winners and thank you to Pros Ty Loomis and Kelley Larsen who did not disappoint in the finals. Ending the week is always sad but this year we went out in style with an amazing group dinner dressed in our nice whites, thank you Park Royal staff! We continued the tradition of silent and live auction during the awards, where we raised a new record, $4,122 for Zihuatanejo schools!!! Thanks to the pros for their donations and to everyone who bid, i.e. Serwa’s and Whipple’s. As always, thank you everyone for another fantastic week filled with great memories & new friends. Next year can’t come soon enough to share the amazing beach, drinks, sun, ocean, volleyball, food & instruction from the pros. We plan to storm the beach again next January and hope to see you all then.

Puerto Vallarta: November 14-21, 2015 (120+ guests, 6 AVP Pros)

This vacation (#38) was our 7th year to the Rivieria Nayarit location and 38th trip overall. PV once again sold-out, 4 years running, with 20+ "extras" that joined us as well. From our side we just have to say WOW, what a great group of guests, it was our pleasure to "work" the week for all you wonderful people. In continuing with our SOB tradition we started the week off in a color, this year we matched the hotel and went with PURPLE, everyone looked amazing!!! Sunday we crammed in some morning volleyball so we could take a new 7hr boat cruise adventure. Those 7 hours felt like 7 minutes, we had an amazing Q & A with the pros (volleyball and some not so volleyball questions), followed up by snorkeling/kayaking/paddle boarding, then we jetted over to Yelepa for an amazing hike to a waterfall for a dip, which led to a secluded beach for snacks/drinks (Raicilla). Upon our return back we had a little company, just a "few" dolphins wanted to play with us, wow what a site! We followed that amazing time up with a dance party as we enjoyed the downtown lights in the dark. Next year look for another new side trip adventure. Early in the week we kicked off the doubles with a little Monday "heat" and enjoyed a little happy hour in the Rock Start Suite where they treat us like true Rock Stars! As the week went along we crowned the champions of our 6 KOB/QOB divisions, CONGRATS to all finalists!!! With the usual "turtle season" going on, guests enjoyed the many newborn turtles, some nests had more than 100! Throughout the week the pros were busy with 100+ Private Pro Games, 6 group clinics, and one semi-private 45 minute clinic. We hope you all walked away better volleyball players learning from some of the best on the planet. As always we finished the week up matching everyone up with coed partners. After two days of intense competition we crowned our final champions over the 3 divisions, again congrats to all who battled all the way through to the finals! Thursday was our usual get out, get crazy, get a wig and let’s go dancing in PV! As the week comes to an end we have our traditional award/closing ceremonies, and since we all have a great tan going let’s do WHITE clothing (except the master of ceremonies, Tom Davenport). PV continues to be the trip each fall where it is the best family reunion ever! We hope everyone enjoys it as much as we do providing it. Cabo San Lucas: April 11-18, 2015 (145 guests, 8 AVP Pros)

This vacation (#37) was our 2nd year to Cabo San Lucas and 37th trip overall. The 2015 Los Cabos vacation marked our return to the California Baja Peninsula, for our annual South of the Border Spring Trip. Over 145 guests joined us from 23 States, including the great white north, learning from the 8 pros on the beach. The week started off with big news, The ENGLE's showed their "bumping" skills and told everyone they are "expecting" the "mother" of all trips! Congrats Engle's!!! We had 8 days of great weather to play as much volleyball as you wanted. The 8 professionals taught 5 group clinics and continued with the Cabo tradition of PS's (Pro Sessions), 45 minute 6 guests and 1 pro semi-private clinics. Highlights of the week included our usual opening color theme night, this year shades of BLUE, Navy/Teal (not Hunkus, even though we had a "Tealle " hand made shirt), where we took over the "Sky Bar." Tuesday was a great morning of ball followed by the side trip, new this year, a Snorkel Cruise to Chileno Beach then to downtown Cabo for dinner. After dinner we had a great time dancing the night away at Squid Roe until you couldn't stand! Good thing the SOB buses were there to get everyone home! "Hooook" was in full force as always, games going until you couldn't see the ball anymore, which would lead into a few hot tub parties. The live and silent auctions raised over $7,000 for a local charities, a fantastic feat from an amazing group of people, that included a custom ball for $1,200. This vacation (#36) was our 21st year in Ixtapa and our 36th SOB trip. We have once again sold out the doubles tournament 4 months prior, thanks for the support, especially from the influx of Canadians and Texans! The stories that come out of the trip are priceless, we look forward to all the new ones to come! As the norm with Ixtapa perfect volleyball weather sunny and no rain or wind, except for the late night rain Monday. We had 1st time visits to the beach from two EXCEPTIONAL people, Deborah the Owner of Mama Norma's & Alex, 1st time in all the years they came out to watch. Our newest addition to the Ixtapa trip was our Private Games (PG's) with the pros, just sign up to experience a once in a lifetime experience. On top of that add in a private photo shoot by our man Russ Dix, where else can you get that. Opening night theme color is always an easy way to "discover" our group and this year we were BRIGHT as the Mexico sun, YELLOW!!! During the day on Sunday our volleyball transitioned from 4x4 to the start of 2x2 with clinic #1 (of 6). Night time was our 1st visit to Alex's where "Macho Macho Mug, Who Wants to Drink the Macho Mug!" Almost half the group went on the Snorkel Boat and reconvened with everyone else for another epic "HOOOOOK, ALL FOUR" day at La Perla in old town Zihuatanejo. Tuesdays volleyball and clinics continued during the day leading to THEME NIGHT, Famous Duo, Combo or Group. As always the group never disappoints with their creativity, 2 groups of Gilligan's Island, couple ROWDY wrestlers, Robert Palmer Addicted to Love, The Single Ladies, etc. The list goes on and on as did the party where 30+ needed to cool off for a late night dip in the pool! Our pro demo matches were back and in full competition, can't beat free professional beach matches, wow they are GOOD! The bologna bar was busy as always with the late night owls, who wants the soup du jour? Thursday continued with King/Queen of the beach and players eliminated got to participate in the always fun coed 2x2 draw, who is my partner going to be? More Sexy Bar action that went late as always, why not? Friday was the finals of 9 different divisions that lead into our award ceremony recognizing our winners as well as our 15 MVP's!!!!! As the award ceremonies came to an end we completed the silent auction and we raised over $4,500 in donations that goes to local Zihuat schools, THANK YOU for your generosity! Friday night we found a new late night dance location, IxtaParadise, what a way to end the week on the "bouncy" floor! We say this every year, but it's true, what a GREAT week, GREAT group, GREAT volleyball, GREAT friends & most of all GREAT memories! Thanks for being a part of something special and look forward to seeing you on the beach! Start the 2016 countdown!

Puerto Vallarta: November 15-22, 2014 (110+ guests, 6.5 AVP Pros)

Our 6th year on the beach in Nuevo Vallarta continued the tradition of an amazing trip with amazing people. The weather was perfect, no rain, no wind for highs of 87 and nice cool lows of 69 at night. The week opened up with our traditional color theme night where we GREENED it up (easy color for the Akers family). Our Sunday boat trip was "adjusted" for an earlier departure so we could snorkel before the sunset. We had a surprise for the guests, a nice little visit for 4 days from the man/the myth/the legend Doble! Thanks Brent for the 4 days. Of course before he left we had a tequila tasting in our Rock Star Suite on the top floor that morphed into a dance party. Our men's and women's 2x2 finals were moved to Wednesday where we had guests "We're Cheering For You ...!" Throughout the week we saw baby turtle hatchings right on the courts and even saw a mama turtle spend 45 minutes to lay her eggs. Our pros did a combo of 6 group clinics, 1 semi private clinic (pro sessions) & countless games of 2 pros and 2 guests, what an experience for each guest! We say it all the time but another amazing week of volleyball, sun, drinks, and nightlife! Cabo San Lucas: April 5-12, 2014 (140+ guests, 6 AVP Pros)

The 2014 Los Cabos vacation marked our inaugural trip to the California Baja Peninsula, and we have found our NEW home for our annual South of the Border Spring Trip. Over 140 guests (26 States plus 11 of our northern neighbors from Canada) and 6 pros were on the beach for 2014. We had 8 days of perfect weather to play as much volleyball as you wanted. The 6 professionals taught 5 group clinics and NEW to the Cabo trip PS's (Pro Sessions), which were private 45 minute sessions with 4 guests and 1 pro "working" with guests on fun and informative drills. Highlights of the week included our usual color theme night of RED (look for a new color for 2014/2015 vacations) where we took over the "Sky Bar." Tuesday we ventured to downtown Cabo San Lucas on 3 SOB buses to Tabasco's and took glass bottom boats out to Lover's Beach and saw the famous "Arch" up close and personal. The group explored downtown Cabo for dinner on the town and somehow a majority of the group found a great dance location at Squid Roe. Each night we saw the usual "Hooook" game go until dark and then leading to a few hot tub parties. Wednesday was the traditional Coed draw and a live auction that raised $800 for a local charity. The pros were in full "Spring Training" mode and would do as many drills as they could to entertain you with their skill; they even threw in a few "side out against the pro" sessions. Thursday afternoon saw our finalists battle it out after 4 days of tournament and we crowned the Anejo/Reposado/Blanco CHAMPIONS! Thursday we went to the other Downtown, San Jose del Cabo and found $1 beers and more dancing at The Barn! The week ended with coed champions being crowned on Friday capped off by our awards ceremony. A nice touch by the hotel was the catered private dinner during the ceremony as we recognized the week's winners, trip trifectas and MVP's. The Friday Silent Auction was a success, thanks to the generosity of our guests we raised over $3,000 between the two auctions. All in all Cabo San Lucas was another successful SOB Vacation and a chance for our guests to play a little volleyball; have a few cold drinks; dance the night away, and meet like minded players from all over! Thanks to everyone for being a part of our 1st trip to Los Cabos! See you in 2015!

Ixtapa: January 18-25, 2014 (230+ guests, 8 AVP Pros)

The 2014 Ixtapa trip marked our 20th year in Ixtapa, & 21 years of vacations South of the Border. Over 230 guests (20 States plus Bermuda, Canada & Germany) and 8 pros were on the beach for 2014. We had 8 days of perfect weather to play as much volleyball as you wanted (some guests over 100 games). The 8 professionals taught 6 clinics and played over 450 games of pick up play. Highlights of the week included our theme nights, starting off with our "colors" theme of RED then later in the week First Responder (everything from Dr's to Superheros to The Texas Rangers). We (most of us, 65 CO strong) all were happy watching the Broncos win instead of playing volleyball Sunday afternoon, priorities here! Monday another sold out snorkel cruise that led the way into Zihuat for some hook on the famous beautiful beach of La Perla. Some new games came about like "Sound Hook" and "Whirl Pool." New to Ixtapa 2014 was the addition of a Women's pro 2x2 demo match Tuesday to go along with the men's 2x2 demo Wednesday! Kopados aka Tree House Bar, was a hot & sweaty but the drinks were cold and the dancing went all night. Hook games every night until dark with some Pro's using props such as flip flops, paddle boards, coconuts, chairs, etc. Sexy Bar was ... well as we always say SEXY! Alex's was a staple many nights for $1 beers and MANY games of Thumper. The week ended as we headed on over to The Generals, for dancing which included Twister and maybe a microphone all night long! The Friday auction we saw the generosity of our guests raise $2,900 for Los Ninos to build schools in the area. All in all another great week of sun, volleyball, drinks, games, dancing and overall great people! Thanks to everyone for being a part of Ixtapa 2014! See you in 2015!

Puerto Vallarta: Nov. 30th - Dec.7th, 2013 (100+Guests, 6 AVP Pros)

Puerto Vallarta (PV) 2013 had 100+ guests and 14 nets on the beach in front of the beautiful Hard Rock Hotel. Our 5th anniversary on the beach in PV was one of the best to date! We had an amazing group of players from 20+ states, including Canada & Germany playing volleyball for 8 straight days with 6 of the best pros in the world, i.e. a Silver Medalist! The week kicked off with RED as our opening theme night, the boat cruise had dolphin and bird sighting's which led into an incredible boat dance party! Amazing pro to guest ratio of 1 to 15 with some of the best beach players on this earth. We had a couple birthdays to celebrate, like we need a reason to have fun. Our 3-time coed champion continued his dominance in the coed draw in a thriller 3 game set. By the end of the week things got even better with crazy Wig/Hair/Clothes night for downtown dancing in PV, where we saw some limbo and slip and slide contests!

Nassau Bahamas: March 2nd - March 9th, 2013 (54 Guests, 2 AVP Pros)

This was SOB's 1st trip outside of Mexico to Nassau Bahamas. We had 50+ guests on the beautiful white sandy Cable Beach that enjoyed volleyball games and clinics from our 2 top notch pros, Evan and Christal Engle. Each and every day the games were fun and competitive, with Coed 4x4, Men's/Women's 2x2, and we ended the week with the Coed 2x2 finals on Friday. During the week the wind was minimal with plenty of sunshine while Tom & Doug "manned" the pick ax. Inaugural trips have the best stories, and this trip didn't disappoint, from the daiquiri drinks at the shack across the street made with real fruit, Senor Frogs dance party featuring "Leap Frog," the snorkel cruise in amazing blue water, visiting the famous fish fry row, to "borrowing" a bus for transportation of 50+ people, grabbing beers all week from Tom/Doug's bathtub/shower suite, Atlantis Casino Night, and everything in between. This will be a trip that is remembered by all for the adventures, the people and of course the 8 days of volleyball on the white sands of Nassau!

Ixtapa: January 15-22, 2011 (200+ guests, 7 AVP Pros)

The 2011 Ixtapa marked our 17th year in Ixtapa. The trip sold out on October 15th (160 players) so we decided to add additional 30 spots and bump the draw to 192 players. This required more staff, more pros, more nets, and a tweak or two to the formats. Rotating 4's was cut back to two rounds in order to add more doubles and "open" an afternoon for Hook at La Perla in Zihuatanejo. 2011 also saw the addition of a Double Elimination Coed 2's draw for all players failing to advance to the Elite 8's. Sexy Bar rocked again, Double Dutch was in full swing, The Chan Man brought it all to the final and Dane made good on side bets when his man lost, top auction item was some massage time with LA Vanessa, and all in all, it was another exceptional week.

Puerto Vallarta was added in 2009, replacing Ixtapa week 2. We stayed at the 5 star Vallarta Palace (now named the Hard Rock Vallarta) and it was off the charts...amazing food, amazing weather, and amazing people. Lish surprised everyone by showing up unannounced! Highlights: zip lining (Putt Putt Boom), drinking the hotel out of Corrolejo Tequila on the first night, happy hour joke off in beach bar, Dancing in the ZOO Balloon Cage, loud...and quiet parties in the Sushi Bar, turtles hatching courtside, Rock Out on Court 1, " I love playing in the rain", Sake Bombs, Dan's Balloon Dance, Nutmeg, Bat Rays at Dawn, courtside cocktail service, "you don't have to say "come on" when I am already there", late night room service, hot tubbing, great sunsets, perfect weather. Doble's back. 2009 saw AVP Pro Brent Doble join us for a record 6th time. A self professed Tequila Snob, Brent arranged for little Tequila tasting early in the week at the rooftop pool (1st year SOB Staff received the Penthouse Suite and we haven't looked back). Brent spent the week playing pick-up with the guests and teaching clinics while our other pros, Alicia and Ryan. Alicia and Ryan competed in, and won the SOB Main Draw. Floaty pool toys were S.O.P. all week, Disco night was nuts, and the Sexy Bar was still Sexy.

The 2008 trip was blessed by the new energy of Lish "Texas Tornado" Polzin who was made welcome early in the week when Bill Schuster inquired if she was a BB or A player. El Helmeto toured from court to court, and bar to bar all week cheering her on. We had clam sheep bikini's on for the Snorkel Trip, there were work up courts of flippy cup (Doble), and some crazy rounds of thumper in the Lobby bar. Park Royal opened the new "Chill Lounge" above the waterfall in the pool which was promptly dubbed the "Sexy Bar".

Close to 200 players joined us for the 2001 trip, spread over two weeks. Players received SOB fleece vests as a gift. We had our final Troncones Trip ($30 got you the bus ride and two cocktails) with a couple injuries in the Duck, Duck, Goose competition at the Bonfire on the Beach. We also hosted the inaugural hook session at La Perla on Playa la Ropa after the week 2 Sail and Snorkel Cruise. We were officially recognized by DIF Municipal in Zihuatanejo for the group's contributions to their school outreach program.

What a crazy year. We topped 200 guests and had our largest tournament to date, with 24 nets on the beach. Macarena was the song of the year, Dancing in the clubs was off the charts, Curtis, Meckna, Valinda and Becker taught some great clinics, and we made our first set of donations to school children in the local villages.

Almost 200 guests joined us for SOB #5. 1998 marked our last tournament play at Troncones and we topped it off with a huge bonfire on the beach. We missed Mick Jagger by one day at the Burro Burracho, Viking Master was the "bar game" of choice (ohh, ahh, ohh ahh), and everyone came home with "concrete burns" from the slide at Mandilles Rooftop Dance Club. We had the "Fan Incident" at JJ's Lobster & Shrimp and Deb, the manager, saved the day.

Ixtapa: January 1997 (126 Guests)

Year 4 SOB breaks 100 guests and formalizes the 4x4 ladder and King/Queen formats. Portable lights were once again fired up for opening night at Carlos and Charlies, and we rented buses, from Acapulco, and took the entire group to Troncones for part of the 4's tourney. Everyone got an SOB Beach Towel, and the Omni Hotel was now a Doubletree (love those chocolate chip cookies). We had our first "Pro" join the trip, Curtis Griffen, and we offered our first clinics. We also introduced the idea of MVP's, the players who brought the positive Mojo to the court every day and elevated the game of everyone they played with.

The Rally: Ixtapa, January 1996 (55 Guests)

Thanks to all of you who rallied, signed up, and made SOB 3 happen; it laid the foundation for many volleyball vacations to come. 55 guests joined us including our first two out of state players, Thad Quinnly and Jennifer Karas (Chicago). We actually set up lights on the beach in front of Carlos and Charlies so we could play all night back in 1996. We also chartered buses for an epic trip out to the Burro Borracho at Troncones. Paradise Found: Ixtapa 1995 (14 Guests)

In the spring of 1994, we drove the west coast of Mexico researching beaches. We stumbled into Ixtapa and knew we had found the perfect location. Unfortunately, nobody had heard of it and only 14 guests joined the trip. Like Cancun in '94, the small group allowed us to toss nets in the rental Surburbans, head out for the day, explore the region, and set up for games on beaches up and down the coast. We discovered the Burro Borracho, hiked to the secret beach in Zihuatanejo, and played a ton of volleyball. We also decided it was our last trip, the economics didn't pencil. But everyone pleaded us to return to Ixtapa, promising they would drag their friends down to paradise for the '96 trip.....which they did. Thanks to you all: Mike Aggen, Eric Schliesman, Steve and Nancy Carpenter, George "Zep" Zepernick, Mitch Fong, Eric Kloor, Greg Sherwin, Mel Reichert, Erin Johansen, Crystal Harrison, and Jeff Hart! SOB exists today because of all of you.

The Beginning: Cancun 1994 (30 Guests)

It was our first volleyball trip South Of the Border (SOB) and we teamed up with Ports of Call Travel Club in Denver and headed to Cancun. The group included 21 gamers, a couple significant others, and 3 windsurfing couples from Aspen who liked our travel package. We had a great trip that included a clinic for some local school kids, pick up with the staff of a cobbler shop en route to Chitchen Itza, late nights of dancing at Mango Tango, some good days on the beach, some windy days on the beach, and lots of volleyball on the court at Fat Tuesdays. Jeremy Chalom, Eric Kloor and Marlene Giordano were our Round Robin WInners and Greg Sherwin and Jules Van Puersem received MVP honors. Everyone had a blast filling the days with informal round robin and pick-up play, and exploring Cancun. Thanks to the original SOB Cast, you all were part of the start of something very special:
